6. WESTMINSTER ABBEY - MILLBANK - TATE BRITAIN Mixing some of Britain's greatest architecture with some of its greatest art, this tour begins with a visit to Westminster Abbey (see Highlights Tours) one of the great examples of Gothic architecture. Opposite is the neo-Gothic Victorian splendour of the Palace of Westminster (the Houses of Parliament). Alongside, Victoria Tower Gardens contains a very fine sculpture group by Rodin. We'll walk along the river with views across to Lambeth Palace, the London home of the Archbishop of Canterbury. A detour will take you down streets of some of the most charming (and expensive) 18th century houses in London and into Smith Square. Discover why the church of St. John's is known as "Queen Anne's footstall". Our walk continues in the shadow of spy headquarters (MI5) and eventually to the site of the Millbank Penitentiary. From here prisoners were transported to the penal colonies of Australia. Happily prisoners have been replaced by paintings; the old prison was demolished to make way for an art gallery, opened in 1897. After a visit to the café at Tate Britain (see Highlights Tours) your tour will end with a tour of the collection.
