7. St. PAUL'S CATHEDRAL - MILLENNIUM BRIDGE - TATE MODERN

Unlikely partners, facing each other on either side of the Thames, are St. Paul's Cathedral and Tate Modern.

A tour of St. Paul's Cathedral (see Highlights Tours) will reveal to you the beauty of the architecture and the paintings and mosaics that are contained within. Our refreshment stop will be in the Crypt Café.

From there we take a short walk across the river on the Millennium Bridge. This was the first new river crossing in central London for a century. Using a radical new design the bridge was the work of the architect Norman Foster and the sculptor Anthony Caro.

It does, however, have an unfortunate soubriquet - Londoners call it "The Wobbly Bridge" after its memorable but less than successful grand opening when it was clear that the bridge was swaying quite prominently. Happily (though maybe disappointingly) this has now been remedied and you will be able to enjoy the views of the City and Bankside.

On the far bank is the recreation of Shakespeare's Globe theatre and immediately ahead looms the chimney of Tate Modern (see Highlights Tours).

Originally a power station, the building has been described as a cathedral of art and certainly the turbine hall has something of the dimensions and grandeur of a gothic cathedral. Your tour will take you through some of the most important works and installations currently on show.
