9. LEIGHTON HOUSE - KENSINGTON ("ALBERTOPOLIS") - VICTORIA & ALBERT MUSEUM

The theme of this tour is the Victorians; the artists and designers who shaped the aesthetics of the 19th century.

From the domestic splendour of Leighton House (see Highlights Tours) we travel along Kensington High Street (a bus or taxi ride may be required) to the rural tranquillity of Kensington Gardens.

Here you will see the extraordinary Albert Memorial, commemorating Prince Albert, the consort of Queen Victoria and one of the greatest pieces of Victorian design. The Prince was one of the driving forces behind the Great Exhibition of 1851. The exhibition was deeply influential on the development of the applied arts in Britain and its enormous popularity resulted in profits which were used to build a number of major institutions which now form a district called "Albertopolis".

Imperial College is located here along with many of the national museums: The Science Museum, the Natural History Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum (see Highlights Tours).

After refreshments at the V&A your tour will be completed with highlights of this truly amazing collection.
