8. COURTAULD INSTITUTE OF ART - THE SOUTH BANK - TATE MODERN

Definitely designed for the dedicated modernist, this tour brings you some of the finest modern art and architecture in London. Starting at the Courtauld Institute (see Highlights Tours) you will see its fabulous collection of Impressionist, Post-Impressionist and 20th century paintings.

Crossing Waterloo Bridge brings us to the South Bank, the largest arts complex in Europe and a fascinating example of the development of modern architecture in the second half of the 20th century.

From the elegance of the 1952 Royal Festival Hall to the Brutalism of the Hayward Gallery (1968) and the austere refinement of the Royal National Theatre (1976).

Much of this remains controversial architecture, loved and loathed in almost equal measure. Our walk will explain the prevailing aesthetics and objectives that influenced these designs.

Continuing along the river we come to another powerful example of 20th century architecture - the building of Tate Modern (see Highlights Tours) and, after a refreshment stop we will tour some of the major works in the permanent collection.
