3. COURTAULD INSTITUTE - COVENT GARDEN - BRITISH MUSEUM Your tour begins with the collections of the Courtauld Institute (see Highlights Tours) in the splendid rooms of Sir William Chambers' Somerset House, once the home of the Royal Academy of Art. From the Renaissance to Post-Impressionism the gallery contains some of the most important paintings in London. From there we walk into the heart of the West End and "Theatreland", passing several theatres including the Theatre Royal Drury Lane and the Royal Opera House and the Theatre Museum. Covent Garden Market was once London's principal fruit & vegetable market. Destined for demolition, a vociferous campaign saved the old market buildings which today contain intriguing shops and restaurants. You will see the church outside which Eliza Doolittle sold flowers in the film "My Fair Lady". The narrow cobbled streets of the area conjure up a vivid picture of London's past. We walk into Bloomsbury, an area associated with the intellectual life of London for the last two centuries. Famous for the Bloomsbury Group in the early 20th century, here you will find the University of London and one of the greatest storehouses of world art and culture: The British Museum (see Highlights Tours) Our refreshment stop will be in the stunning new Great Court, followed by a tour of some of the greatest treasures of the museum.
